Do you think autism is over diagnosed?
Severe infantile autism--the kind that requires hosptalization--is the ultimate form of ordinary childhood neurosis. Freud found that all children under four-and-a-half have neurotic symptoms, as in the "terrible twos." So, technically, since infantile neurosis is at least a mild form of autism, it is actually *under* diagnosed in that it is universal in small children. However, it's a pointless diagnosis in most cases, because unless it is severe enough to interfere with school work and relationships with other children, it's more like a phase than an illness.
