Hades, the underworld is ruled by Hades--Greek religion. Why is Hades used twice in Christian New Testament?
Well, one issue is the translation cycles of the doent. Since much of the new testament was written in Greek, it makes sense that the authors would have used the name of the closest cultural concept. It's also important to keep in mind (something we Americans, with our much lauded division of "church and state" frequently forget) that religion in those days wasn't just "something you do on Sundays"...it was evident in every part of the culture. The thing that made the Jews *really wierd* to the Romans wasn't their religion, it was the fact that *because* of their religion, they didn't seem to participate fully in any part of Roman culture!
