What is the subjunctive?

It depends partly on what language you're talking about. But if you are talking about Spanish, it is used for a subordinate verb when expressing a future (therefore unrealised) situation. In Italian however, it is used for a subordinate verb to express an opinion, hypothesis or other uncertainty.
